2006/2007 Mac Pro (1,1/2,1) and OS X El Capitan

Hello!

I have a MacPro1,1 and I was able to install El Capitan (10.11.6). I'm using a GeForce GT 630. I upgraded the processors to two Intel Xeon Processor X5355 (8M Cache 2.66Ghz 1333Mhz FSB). The RAM is maxed out at 32 GB.

This computer is mainly used for audio production (Pro Tools and REAPER). I'd like to improve performance. I think the problem might be with the GPU but I honestly don't know if this machine can get any zippier.

Any suggestions for improvements?

The only time this has happened to me, the OS hard disk was failing.

Check the system log in the Console app. Look for disk related messages...

I have a quick question and I am totally new to MAC OSX as I just started by buying an old Mac Pro 1.1 1186(EMC 2113).

I followed the steps you listed long ago and got El Capitan running. The issue I am having now is certain apps freeze up and cause severe screen tearing. Chrome causes it and when opening applications, it will run at about 1 frame per 2 seconds (YIKES) and pretty much lock up the OS until I can close it.

Any Idea on what is causing this? I upgraded it to 16GB of RAM. My thoughts are I am running a different monitor other than the original that comes with the desktop, I am also still on the old GT 7300 256MB card. I noted in Activity Manager WindowServer was pushing into 130% when opening Chrome as a window or Applications. Everything else works fine with minor tearing but not much frame drop. What could be possible steps towards making El Cap run more smoothly? Thanks, everyone!

There is no driver for that card in El Capitan, so you get the results you're experiencing. Look in post #1 for suggestions around other cards, many off-the-shelf PC cards from that era will work, albeit without a boot screen.

Great, I will look into that. I just got a GT 710 coming my way tomorrow (30 day return if it doesn't work for me) so I hope that resolves the issue, as I had originally thought it was the GPU, just didn't know why, or about the unsupported cards.

I don't know, I think that's a later card (circa 2016?) but based on 2014 tech. My guess is it'll work? (with no boot screens)

I guess the simple question I have... will I have a snappier performance if I upgrade from the GT 630? Aside from video card, SSD, processors and RAM, what other upgrades can boost performance?

It happened in May once before but apple fixed it after a couple of days. Now I actually kinda lost hope since it's been a while and El Capitan is no longer officially supported.

I have this weird issue with Mail and iCloud drive.
I have a 1,1 mac pro running El cap 10.11.4

When i try to add an O365 email it will not log in and asks for manual setup.
iCloud drive is just spinning on "setting up iCloud drive", have tried to log out of iCloud, restart and log in again.

Anyone who has had this issue?

Maybe an update to 10.11.6 helps? Just guessing, but iCloud works flawlessly for me with 10.11.6.
Just be careful with the upgrade because of the unsupported security updates (2018).

I have switched between the Nvidia web driver and Max OS x driver and it still does not show boot screen when loading up. It also says ECC not supported. Any idea how I can get this working? Is it an Apple branded graphics card? If not then it is unlikely you will see boot screens. Apple was the first mainstream vendor to commit fully to EFI as a replacement for BIOS. PCI peripherals such as graphics cards have “extension ROMs” (usually EPROMs). These extension ROMs are loaded by the boot firmware. The code helps the firmware initialise the card and sets the low level registers to properly route the video output to the connected port.

Most off-the-shelf graphics card vendors ship with just “BIOS extension code” flashed into the EPROM. Apple on the other hand ships their cards with two sections in the EPROM: BIOS extension code; AND EFI extension code.

Most PCs still use the legacy BIOS code during initialisation, Macs on the other hand do not. Macs will only initialise the graphics card if there is EFI extension code present in the card’s EPROM.

Macs (and PCs) will “fall back” to analog VGA if no other option is viable. If you have no boot screens initially (and you desperately need them), try VGA.

The Mac community put a lot of effort into modding some graphics cards. Because the BIOS and EFI code happily coexist in separate sections it was “fairly easy” to re-flash the EPROM on some graphics cards to retain the original BIOS extension code and to add EFI extension code after the BIOS code. It all depends on the card/manufacturer and whether there is sufficient spare room on the EPROM to stitch in the extra EFI section.

This forum does not really cover the GFX card reflashing. Your best bet is to head on over to the Netkas forums http://netkas.org/forum/. You will need to be patient and search for threads that mention your card vendor and model. In most cases there are “tools” that can extract the BIOS code from your card, and then build a modified binary file with both the original BIOS plus the Apple-derived EFI section. This is almost always the safest approach because you retain the original BIOS section of YOUR card (compared with trying to find a pre-built binary, which may be a slight variant compared to your card).

I did a bit more research. The GT120 was released after the transition from EFI32 to EFI64 (32/64bit implementations of EFI code).

Even if it is an Apple-branded card, if it has EFI64 code it will not initialise for boot screens on a MacPro 1,1 / 2,1 because these original MacPros use EFI32 code on the motherboard.

There are posts that say you can get a GT120 to work on an original MacPro so don’t give up!

FYI: when the EFI partners changed the core specification (Tianocore) from 32-bit to 64-bit, a transition feature was utilised to ease the transition. This is known as EFI Byte Code or EBC.

EBC is an intermediate binary format that is “bit-neutral”. EFI motherboard implementations generally support EBC via a built-in interpreter. EBC can therefore be used on classic MacPros 1,1 / 2,1 (EFI32) and newer MacPros 3,1 (EFI64) and higher.

From memory, Apple-branded cards with Nvidia chipsets had EBC code in their EPROMs. I’m not sure if the gt120 does.

I now have 16GB 667 and I would like to upgrade to 32. It's much cheaper to buy another 16 instead of the 32 with 800 MHz. But if it's worth it, I would consider it. Thanks in advance!

Getting some really unstable behaviour in my MP 2006. Was previously running el cap for a couple of years, without too many issues, then boom, big kernel panic. After that, I couldn't get back in without panicking, so I decided to do a fresh install. I chose the Target Disk Mode method, using another recent Macbook to install, replaced the boot.efi, disabled security updates etc. Unfortunately I haven't quite got it as rock solid as it used to be. It boots up fine, but tends to kernel panic under certain conditions, such as running Carbon Copy Cloner, or launching the game 'Dota2'. Some installers wont work anymore either (Adobe CC desktop app).

I have run some hardware tests (Rember, Techtool Pro and DiskWarrior) but haven't found any faults.

Any ideas?

I could try another fresh install via a different method?

Take a look at the crash logs. Even KPs tend to write to the logs.

Look for the “back trace”.
Does it mention the same few lines with every crash (is each crash the same)?
Does it mention the same cause each time (e.g. segmentation fault)?
If it’s a seg fault is it showing the same memory address each time?

The back trace usually lists the kernel extensions that have been loaded (kext), oldest loaded at the bottom, most recently loaded at the top. Is it always the same kext that is crashing?

Have you loaded, or updated a piece of software recently? Does that correlate with the kext above?

If the crash logs are all similar post a copy of one here...

Unfortunately I don't have all the important crash logs, as I ended up restoring from a Time Machine backup a few days ago, after I tried doing those fresh installs a few times.

The TM backup is more stable, but definitely still has issues with some installers and the occasional kernel panic. It did a panic yesterday while doing a Carbon Copy Clone, but unfortunately did not produce a log that I can see. I'll try to reproduce to see if one can be generated.

If I search a log, am I looking for the words 'back trace', or is it more of a section?

On a more positive note, Tech Tool found that one of my HDDs was failing to unmount. I had to unmount it via terminal, then rebuild the structure etc, so I'm really hoping it's all related to a corrupt drive.

Hmmm, that’s not good!

It’s definitely a KP and the back trace seems to indicate it’s talking to a disk. I suspect (from your previous description) that the disk is bad. Do what you can to back up your data and aim to replace the failing disk.

There are two possibilities from that log

1. One of your other disks is failing. Do you have any disks with FAT format?
2. Bad memory module(s) do you have any memory modules with capacity less than 2GB? Could try to re-seat your memory modules...

It happened in May once before but apple fixed it after a couple of days. Now I actually kinda lost hope since it's been a while and El Capitan is no longer officially supported.

Maybe an update to 10.11.6 helps? Just guessing, but iCloud works flawlessly for me with 10.11.6.
Just be careful with the upgrade because of the unsupported security updates (2018).

Have a look at that thread. You're still running El Capitan so nothing changed. You can either install an older version of iTunes or use the beta webpage apple provides for apple music. There are two possibilities from that log

1. One of your other disks is failing. Do you have any disks with FAT format?
2. Bad memory module(s) do you have any memory modules with capacity less than 2GB? Could try to re-seat your memory modules...

No disks in FAT format, so I hope all disks are fine.
I have 2 memory modules under 2GB, so could definitely be those.
Before trying the re-seat option, I decided to take out the Sonnet Allegro USB3 card, which seems to have stopped the crashes during those CCC backups. I'll test some more with new Sonnet drivers too.
I think/hope this has solved part of the issue now.

what size are the low capacity RAM sticks? It’s well known/documented that El Capitan will crash if you have 512mb sticks (and some reports when using 1gb sticks, though these are less reported)

If you have any 512mb sticks, remove them.

I have 2 x 1GB sticks. If I have any more crashes, i'll take them out for sure and report back.

Please copy/paste the command you used so that I can see which disk you were targeting.

Also, you can scroll up in the Terminal window to see more of the progress transcript. If you can, copy/paste the whole transcript into a text file and upload it here, I’ll take a look at it for you.
