So do we k ow exactly what kind of 3rd party memory would work with the new Mac Pro?

would any ddr4 2933Mhz ecc RAM work?My plan is to get 4x32gb for a 12 or 16 core machine.
Any other variants?

I’m looking at this:

Soooo someone said we will only get 100% performance with 6 or 12 dimms, 4 would only give 2/3rd available performance. How meaningful would that be in real life?
in that case I guess I’d go with 6x16gb for the 12 core and 6x32 for the 16 core, but doing it in steps, at first getting 4 dimms and later another 2.
How will we find out how to distribute the dimms properly?

According to Apple the 7,1 can use R-DIMMS and LR-DIMMS, but they can't be mixed.

"R-DIMMs and LR-DIMMs cannot be mixed in the same system; all DIMMs in Mac Pro (2019) must match type."

if I get 48gb apple config. How can I expand this in the future? Will i only be locked in to Apple's ram, or a certain spec? or can I just add on?

You can add any ECC DDR4 as long as it's the same type (all R-DIMMs, or all LR-DIMMs). It looks like the 32GB and smaller modules from Apple are R-DIMMs and the 64GB and larger modules are LR-DIMMs.

You alternate DIMM slots for maximum performance with 6 DIMMs (judging by the memory diagrams of factor-installed RAM say in MKBHD's video), or fill them all for 12.

Realistically the performance penalty for not properly matching to memory channels is pretty minor versus the performance penalty for running out of RAM.

Prices for 2666 vs 2933 are minimal at best, usually under $10/module. Suggest everyone going with entry level CPU looks at 2933 for future value in case you upgrade later.

RAM SPECS from Apple:

2933MHz DDR4 full-length DIMM.
Mixing memory speeds is not recommended.
Error-correcting code (ECC)
8GB, 16GB, 32GB, 64GB, or 128GB DIMMs
Registered (R-DIMM) or Load-Reduced DIMM (LR-DIMM).
Do not mix R-DIMMs and LR-DIMMs.
288-pin
Use the same size memory modules across all slots to maximize performance.
DIMMs with heatsinks are not supported and may damage the DIMM mechanism.

Mac Pro model Max RAM Speed Type
8-core 768GB 2666MHz DDR4 EEC LR-DIMM or R-DIMM
12-core 768GB 2933MHz DDR4 EEC LR-DIMM or R-DIMM
16-core 768GB 2933MHz DDR4 EEC LR-DIMM or R-DIMM
24-core 1.5TB 2933MHz DDR4 EEC LR-DIMM or R-DIMM
28-core 1.5TB 2933MHz DDR4 EEC LR-DIMM or R-DIMM

I found this one, will it compatible?

SAMSUNG 64GB 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM ECC DDR4 2933 (PC4 23400) LR DIMM Model M386A8K40CM2-CVF

https://www.newegg.com/global/au-en/samsung-64gb-288-pin-ddr4-sdram/p/1FR-004A-00002?Description=2933MHz DDR4 EEC LR-DIMM &cm_re=2933MHz_DDR4_EEC_LR-DIMM-_-1FR-004A-00002-_-Product

If I got the base model with 32GB (Four 8GB DIMMs)
if I add this 64GB in on top of one of the other rams slots without removing the original Four 8GB DIMMs ?
will it work? thanks a lot

No, it wouldn't work. The 8GB DIMMs are R-DIMMs and the 64GB DIMM is an LR-DIMM. You can't mix types. Also Apple says to install DIMMs of the same size. So it would be better to install 8 more 8GB DIMMs to reach 96GB, or replace the ones in there with 16GB or 32GB DIMMs.

...or you can save even more and buy directly from Crucial, Hynix, Samsung, or Kingston and/or their resellers.

OWC RAM is often used modules slapped with their label on top and this is often not disclosed to the purchaser, plus they charge a premium.

This is generally a better idea I think, but they do specifically document how to install DIMMs of mixed capacity on the tech doc, so from the base 4 DIMMs, you could just add another 2, 4 or 8 DIMMs, so long as they're RDIMMs of the right speed/etc.

Adding 6x32GB Crucial and throwing out the supplied 32gb would cost about 900€.
If I would leave the original Dimms inside as well, would it cost me any speed?

Other alternative: If I wanted to add just 2x32 to the existing 4x8GB - how would that impact system performance?

I'm just not sure if I really need 192 Gigabytes of Ram for editing and After Effects, it sounds INSANE kinda ;)

Is there an easy breakdown somewhere about what parts are user upgradable for the mac pro? It seems modular, but you would need to purchase all the components from apple themselves.

dumb question: Are there any issues with mixing OWC ram, with Apple ram?
I have 48GB configured ram @ 6 8gb sticks, since there are 12 slots, can I get more 8gb OWC sticks and just plug and play them in the rest of the slots?

Simple answer, it depends. In past machines it's been an issue because Apple (generally) used more expensive variety and OWC sold/resold a cheaper variety. They did not match manufacturer or spec and could create issues.

Would not suggest anyone purchases 8GB stick upgrades as new from 3rd party. There will be small flood of Apple issued modules on the "used" market in 6-12 months when everyone starts upgrading these machines, so if you can wait it out, buy those instead.

Personally would use the cost savings and start at 16GB or 32GB modules from Crucial, Hynix, Samsung or Kingston.
