I have a Netgear R7000 that work for my needs but I can only get it to work reliably with their older firmware which has security flaws. I have been reading about the Edgerouter Light. If I put the Edgerouter lite before my R7000 will this solve my security problem. I was prepared to replace the R7000 but I wondering if this is a better solution.
Thanks

It would solve some (probably most) of your security problems. The EdgeRouter would be hit by the 24/7 barrage of bad stuff on the internet, which is what you want. However, your R7000 would still be vulnerable to anything connecting to it on your LAN. The most obvious scenario would be someone who is able to get on your network, but the most probable scenario is that one of your machines gets compromised by malware and is used to attack your router. In this case, running a vulnerable R7000 would not be your friend.
