Have a macbook pro it had El Capitan installed. I formatted the drive performed first aid and everything checked okay, but I am unable to reinstall El Capitan. During the install it gives me the time remaining and the time jumps to 733,808,684 hours and 10 minutes then after a bit down to about 4 minutes then the install quits and that's it. Any thoughts? I can run mac OS, or Linux from a external drive no problem.

Good day

Which MacBook Pro do you have?

Does it have an HDD (spinning hard drive) and not an SSD?
An HDD might be old enough that it is simply failing (might test OK, but the final test is actually installing and booting to a boot system.

Is your El Capitan installer on a bootable USB drive?
