Crazy I know but maybe worth a shot - is it possible anyway to upgrade an old iPhone 4s beyond iOS7, that's also trustworthy.

I assume Apple no longer issues/signs these upgrades.

The iPhone 4 cannot be updated beyond iOS 7, but the iPhone 4S supports iOS 9. It will be a bit slower, but if you turn off transparency and motion it works ok. You can update it through iTunes or the settings app. As it's the last update apple still signs it, but only on the iPhone 4S.

I would leave it on 7. It gets noticeably slower on IOS 8 and 9. 7 is the best for a 4S.
