If I have an external SSD and connect it to my mac (Mojave) via USB-C, and install Windows on it, then could I boot the mac into Windows from the drive, without needing to have a partition inside my computer?
It it this way in Boot Camp? Or can Boot Camp only install on the internal drive? There's nothing about the Mac that prevents this. Windows does however not officially support external installations. You can get it to work no problem, but it is an unsupported configuration by Microsoft and may require workarounds to get it to install.

Ah, makes sense. Thanks for clearing it up!As chscag said, BootCamp won't help you, since Microsoft sees it as an unsupported configuration running on an external drive, Apple wouldn't want to set up unsupported Windows configurations and get all the blame. (even though it works just fine)
That's a wonderful video! I'd love to follow those steps. Although it seems Microsoft no longer offers the April version of Windows 10. I wonder if the November version works with this method, or if the opportunity is lost. Which month version did you use?I just installed Windows 10 on a Samsung T5 external SSD drive on Sunday with this tutorial:
Only had one set back which was to disable startup security for external drives. Other than that it was pretty easy and since you download the boot camp drivers from Boot Camp Assistant you'll have all the drivers you'll need.

Awesome! That's great news. Thank you very much.I used the November 2019 version!
I see. Will trying to update break things, or will it simply tell me that I can't update?I do this with my Samsung T3. lifesaver.
just don’t expect all the big Annual updates To work. Security updates work but Windows ToGo efi boot issues dont allow some updates. so you’ll need to fresh install if you want the newest system updates. Not an issue for security updates tho.
It’ll tell you it can’t update And why.I see. Will trying to update break things, or will it simply tell me that I can't update?
