Macbook Pro 15" Early 2011 with failed AMD GPU (do not work) - 8GB RAM - High Sierra 10.13.6

1 - Does anyone know if Logic Pro X (10.4.5) works with a Macbook Pro 2011 with failed AMD GPU?

This Macbook Pro 2011 only works with Intel HD Graphics 3000.

It is to learn how to use Logic Pro X and make basic songs.

In the TechSpecs of Logic Pro X reports:
  • macOS 10.13.6 or later
  • 4GB of RAM
  • OpenCL-capable graphics card or Intel HD Graphics 3000 or later
  • 256MB of VRAM
Intel HD Graphics 3000 does not have OpenCL support in High Sierra 10.13.6.

2- In this case Logic Pro X does not use OpenCL with Intel HD 3000?
Example: DaVinci Resolve do not work with the Intel HD 3000 GPU because there is no OpenCL support.

First you need to buy Logic Pro X for testing. And maybe there is no refund for "Download Software - App Store".

3 - Macbook Pro 2011 slow down with Logic Pro X?

It says:

  • OpenCL-capable graphics card or Intel HD Graphics 3000 or later
So it means one or the other. Therefore it will work on the HD 3000.

Yes, but I wanted to confirm that someone has already run Logic Pro X (10.4.5) on this Macbook Pro 2011 with failded AMD GPU. This Logic Pro X 10.4.5 was released recently.

When I saw the "OR Intel HD 3000 - in TechSpecs" I liked it. But I was wondering if anyone ran Logic Pro X.

If not run, it will be a bureaucracy to cancel the purchase.

Final Cut Pro X has 30 days of evaluation. Apple could do the same with Logic Pro X.

For what its worth - I can run Logic Pro 10.4.1 on my old 2011 17" MBP with a dead AMD GPU and HD Graphics 3000 although I haven't really toused it. Sorry - can't test 10.4.5 as the MBP is only running OS X 10.12 (and having fiddled to get the AMD GPU disabled I don't want to risk an update).

NB: Have you tried Garageband yet? If not, I'd strongly suggest that you start there. Once you get past the surface you're basically working with a cut-down version of Logic. It's very capable, certainly if you just want to "make basic songs". You can't beat free... and if/when you outgrow it, Logic Pro will seem very familiar and can import your Garageband projects.

Macbook Pro 15" Early 2011 with failed AMD GPU (do not work) - 8GB RAM - High Sierra 10.13.6 with SecUpdate 003 (22 may 2019). Only GPU Intel HD 3000 work.

Finally I was able to install Logic Pro X 10.4.5 (Updated 13 June 2019) with GPU Intel HD 3000 with 512 video RAM.

Loaded normally and ran for the basics. I'm a beginner.

I will increase the video memory of the Intel GPU HD 3000 -> 512 MB to 1024 video RAM.
I formatted and made a new install of High Sierra 10.13.6. I have to repeat the procedure below.

I followed this script (AppStoreExtract) to make a copy of Logic Pro X 10.4.5 for backup.
I do not know if the next update will remove the Intel HD 3000 (minimum requirement).

https://github.com/maxschlapfer/MacAdminHelpers/tree/master/AppStoreExtract

https://github.com/maxschlapfer/MacAdminHelpers/blob/master/AppStoreExtract/AppStoreExtract.sh

First copy (only installer .pkg file) Logic Pro X
AppStoreExtract copies only the .pkg file (installer) -> /Users/Shared/AppStore_Packages

The AppStoreExtract will create a .DMG file with the .PKG installer file inside.

Second copy (all files Logic Pro X)
With the following command you then go to the Finder and copy the entire directory of Logic Pro X 10.4.5 (installer and other files).

1 - Finder -> Applications -> Utilities -> Terminal:
Code:
getconf DARWIN_USER_CACHE_DIR
/var/folders/cf/xx0svzbgj46v7fzprc_vs02bw1100gp/C/

2 - Finder -> menu GO -> Go to Folder -> /var/folders/cf/xx0svzbgj46v7fzprc_vs02bw1100gp/C/
The "/C/" at the end is the cache directory.

3 - App Store -> Logic Pro X -> download.

4 - Another directory (example 756467) will be created inside the "C" directory.

Example directory 756467 - files:

flyingIcon
preflight.pfpkg
receipt
xv55544884848484.pkg (Logic Pro X installer)

5 - Keep watching the .pkg file grow larger when you download 1.45 GB.

6 - Keep watching the App Store and Launchpad (download bar progress) until the download is complete.

7 - When you finish downloading, then the App Store will begin the installation. Make a copy of the directory from the Finder (example 756467) to another directory.

8 - After the App Store finishes installing Logic Pro X, then the App Store will delete the Logic Pro X installer directory (example 756467).

/var/folders/cf/xx0svzbgj46v7fzprc_vs02bw1100gp/C/756467

Logic seems to run ok on my MBP with failed AMD GPU - only appears to use integrated graphics. Only problem is inability to have second monitor which you really need when you get into using Logic a bit more.

Yes, Apple has put the AMD GPU connected (wired) to Thunderbolt port.

I am using an external GPU connected to a Samsung Smart TV via Thunderbolt Display Port.

I am using nvram gpu-power-prefs for Intel GPU.

AKiTiO Thunder 2 Box + eGPU Nvidia GTX 1050 Mini.
Warning: Apple has blocked HDMI audio to eGPU Nvidia in High Sierra 10.13.6.

You can test a USB 2.0 to HDMI converter. Depending on the application there may be a lag in the video on the external monitor (USB 2.0 speed).

Buyer Scott Hadzik says it works on Macbook Pro with macOS.
