I have a late 2014 mac mini and it interested if it can play 4K HDR x265 video files in windows 10? The mini has a i5 4278U cpu and iris 5100 igpu.

Short answer: No. Long answer: It's going to struggle with 4K HDR, unlikely that playback will be at a smooth framerate. The Haswell CPU has no hardware decoding.

It studders when I try to play 4k. I was hoping that the iris 5100 would have some hardware decoding.

I have considered to get a eGPU, thou it kind of defeats the purpose of a small and silent htpc. Does anyone know if a eGPU will can do the video decoding?

IF 4k is important to you... well... it's time for a 2018 Mini (or an iMac)...

I would, if it supported outputting 4k 4:4:4, but as far I have been able to find out, it does not.
Its for htpc duty, so an imac is not optimal.
