MacBook 5,1 (not Pro), 8GB RAM and SSD, Catalina is running okay, thinking about going back to last officially supported MacOS or Linux Deepin for more smoother experience. Mostly I use it for browsing and some Word & Excel stuff.

Please share your experience and suggestions.

I have my 5,2 on Catalina, I wanted speed so I went Mavericks but it was too old. I went back to Mojave and now Catalina again. I have a 512 SSD and 16Gb ram.

I run Mavericks on my MacBook5,1 still on its original 160GB Hitachi HDD. Mavericks makes HDD perform just like SSD, I can't tell the difference. I also feel that under Mavericks 2GHz C2D is an overkill for the smooth 1080p video playback, it only uses 25-30% of the CPU. If you are after software/hardware optimisation, then Mavericks is better. I am not even mentioning lower running temperatures, that's a given.
