Apple says no, but when I was looking around the web for my A1181 (Macbook 4,1 Core 2 Duo) I think I recall some people got later versions to work, but had to do some extra workarounds.

You can run up to 10.15 Catalina on your MacBook although versions newer than 10.8 will not have graphics acceleration.
