Mini review: LUMIX DC-G9

It appears I've become a bit of a Panasonic enthusiast, as the DC-G9 marks my 4th LUMIX camera. After some trial and error in finding what works for me, I have settled in to the m43 camp, and I like so much about Panasonic's approach that I've also stayed with the brand. The G9 is pretty much their flagship m43 at the moment, and it's easily the most "premium" camera I've ever used. It feels very solid and all the buttons and knobs have good feel. Everything is weather sealed, so that's a bonus, too.

I'm moving up from the G85, of which I liked quite a bit in terms of size, weight, portability, and results. Still, the G9 with its 4 extra megapixels was calling, and I finally decided to land there. The G9 is noticeably bigger than the G85--mostly with the extra heft, but the m43 lenses are quite manageable in size, so it doesn't get out of control or burdensome. It's a 3 dial camera, and there are programmable function buttons on almost all sides, including a couple on the front that I found by accident. There is also a programmable lever, so there is a lot of flexibility to get things just how you want them.

I haven't had too much time to give it a go, but we all want samples right? I photograph all kinds of things, but mostly around the house its family and wildlife---or are those one in the same? I've been quite pleased with the results, especially considering I'm using standard-issue Panasonic glass. I'm no pro, but here are some samples:

I haven't done many night sky shots, and this was from my urban backyard. I didn't even realize I wasn't at the 12mm setting on my lens, so I missed F3.5 as well. Maybe next time!

I should also add that only the night shot is tripod. The dual IBIS makes many handheld shots a possibility.

Got a GX9 not too long after they came. I really like it as a travel/street camera. But, it's not weather resistant, the EVF is mediocre, and there's no way to physically connect an external shutter release other than using phone app. I do some shooting on the seacoast, and the GX9 just wasn't cut out for what I do in that context. So, I added a G9 several months ago. Obviously, anyone's experience is limited, but ergonomically it's far and away the best camera I've ever used. Really customizable. Lots of external controls. I really like the EVF. Just a really nice camera to use. The two work well for me. GX9 when I want something small, light, and discrete. G9 for landscape, seascape, etc. I even find the CAF works pretty well if I'm chasing the dogs around on the beach.

Following up a little more after some more use. This camera continues to impress me, even with my basic lens collection. It feels like "driver's car," where you have to keep yourself in an ideal range of settings, but it can be really rewarding.

Taken with a $90 lens (used 45-150mm), with the wind blowing pretty hard.

Calm day for this one. Late season bloom from a crab apple.

I can't wait to add some better glass to this body, but I have some saving to do!

Nice review Darmok. I'm also a Lumix shooter and I really enjoy the G9. I've been using Lumix cameras for the past few years. GH3 (sold), GH4, GX7 and the G9 (the camera in my profile pic). I've built up a good lens collection in those years and am very happy with the whole kit.

I find the G9 is a extremely comfortable to hold and the viewfinder is excellent, unlike the horrible EVF that was in the GH3 (main reason I got rid of it). I also appreciate the extensive customization offered in the G9.

I find the m4/3 system to be quite good overall. I'd be interested to get into their full frame stuff but the price is just prohibitive for me.

I like taking photos in lower light levels and have been quite happy with the results the G9 provides.

Very good work! What lenses do you have? The P100-300 will probably be my next, as I like to shoot birds. Some Leica lenses are also on my long term list. Maybe the L12-60 or the L12-35.
