I think the best one I came up with is for my iBook G3 Lime :
Michigan J. Frog
Was quite proud of that one... plus being French, you know... We like to make fun of ourselves, but not the others to do so ... :D

I started this hecking thread and didn’t list out my device names — both past and present.

Might as well here, yes?

These are listed in order of when I had/used them (bold means they exist right now and are in use):

astrologia: a Yikes! G4 (“yikes” was too on-point)
etymologia: an indigo iBook G3
anthropologia: a 400MHz PowerBook G4
dietrologia: my first Windows XP VM (originally an old tower desktop I pieced together entirely from parts I sourced from the curbside)
analogia: an A1134 iBook G4
simbologia: a 466MHz key lime iBook G3
tautologia: a 15-inch A1226 C2D MBP (stolen in ’09)
morfologia: two different A1278s (an early ’09 2.26GHz C2D, whose drive contents were moved to an early ’11 i5 2.3GHz replacement)
urbanologia: a short-lived 2.26GHz 2.26GHz C2D A1278 meant to replace the first, but didn’t; now an early ’08 17-inch 2.6GHz C2D A1261 MBP
ontologia: an ’04 dual-processor A1047 G5
metodologia: a 12-inch A1106 PowerBook G4
epistemologia: the Sierra alter-ego of morfologia (I virtually never use it)
climatologia: an early ’15 A1398 i5 2.7GHz MBP (dead display, anyone wanna buy it?)
deontologia: an A1139 PowerBook G4
glaciologia: an A1138 PowerBook G4 (running SL)
sonologia: an A1418 21-inch quad core i5 2.9GHz iMac

other devices, past and present:
codicologia: a Xerox Phaser 6120 colour laser printer
technologia: a Sony-Ericsson T610 phone
grammatologia: a Nokia E62 (stolen)
ecologia: a BlackBerry Pearl 8100 phone
fenomenologia: a Nexus 5 phone
dialettologia: a Nextbit Robin phone
musicologia: a 1G white iPod nano 2GB (stolen)
musica: a 4G red 16GB iPod nano
acustica: a 5G red 16GB iPod nano
archivio: a complete piece of trash LaCie Big Disk 1TB NAS which ate itself in ’09

OK, good luck busting into my network with this info. :p

The Lab DX
simbologia: a 466MHz key lime iBook G3
hey waIT A MINUTE where have I seen this one before--

Still Azur Lane over here and given they're adding ships to that game faster than I'm adding machines to the lab that's probably how it will be until either a catastrophic freak accident or the end of time.

That said, the whole dns expansion thing became bollocks and unnecessary and I shortened the whole long shared bit to a simple .dx after I moved to keep it simple, at least on LAN. The newest machine to hit the lab is chapayev, an ODROID-C4; and there are now four PowerPC Macs in circulation-- beyond the Companion named enterprise, there is now surcouf (the Twelve), vittorio (the Titanium), and amagi (the Six Dollar eMac).

Since my dad passed, I've gone with names of musical artists that make me think of him, starting with the Mac mini I inherited.
  1. 2011 Mac mini — Etta (James) — now retired in a closet
  2. 2019 Mac mini — Django (Reinhardt) — running VMs, Plex, and other Intel Mac things in the basement
  3. 2021 14" MBP — (Jimi) Hendrix — daily driver
Before that, it was kind of just whatever randomly felt "right" to me for each machine, especially with my PPC Macs. There was Melanie the PMG4 MDD FW800, Darren the B&W G3, Vincent the PBG3 Lombard, Carmen the 2006 white MacBook, Raven the 2011 home built Linux PC (after Melanie died), and many others that are long forgotten now.

Network infrastructure and work machines get boring functional names like piholevm, homebridgevm, gw1 (pfSense router / gateway), sw1 (switch), ap1 (wireless access point), nvr1 (security camera system), Employer MacBook 123 (asset tag number), etc.
