recommended [uk] registrar for simple email domain?

Hiya

I'm after the usual myname.co.uk (or org / com if not available). I'd like to forward the emails to me@ to a webmail account. Gmail will be used as it has the 'alternate from address' feature. I'm on yahoo (for 7+years!) but they want the 'mail plus' product to do the same.

I've only ever had two 'play' domains , they were with 1and1. All was fine, they are cheap, but they don't remind you when it expires, so I've got them for longer than I wanted them. For this reason I'd like someone else. 1and1 were technically fine, never needed fancy features, website was ok for management, but cancelling the contract was a bit of hassle.

So any one recommend the likes of names.co.uk or reg123? The more reputable, the better. I've looked around for net reviews but to no avail. Customer service should be a priority. UKreg seem good but light on info

You could have a look at http://www.just-the-name.co.uk. I've bought my domains from them, and their customer service seems good. My only gripe would be they don't seem to respond at weekends.

From what I can see when I've registered my names, they forward your email to your usual email address unless you do any different. I've moved both my domains on to be hosted by another company straight away, but from what I can tell, if you buy http://www.yourname.co.uk and use whatever@gmail.com to register it, the default setting is that <anything>@yourname.co.uk will be forwarded automatically to whatever@gmail.com. I can't confirm this though, as I haven't used it.

I would also recommend 1&1. They have had some bad press but I guess that goes with the territory of being No.1.
I've had a number of domains with them for a few years and never had any major problems. They do, however, have a very slow email help desk and it's not been very helpful when I've used it!

I was trying to get away from 1and1 though - basically the lack of expiry reminders got me annoyed. You get what you pay for...

Might try just-the-domain though after I read up on them.

oops. Sorry. Didn't read your original post correctly

With 1&1 you can (could) have set your domains to expire before the next billing cycle. Not too sure if they would then email you to tell you that they are about to expire!

As a matter of interest, PlusNet have just bought MetroNet - just-the-name.co.uk parent company.

I've used just-the-name before (and pay-as-you-host as well) and their customer support is good, but their control panel is very basic.

I've used http://www.lowcostnames.co.uk in the past just for uk domain name registration.

I checked out 1&1 for domain hosting about six months ago. I was so unconvinced by their customer service when I had questions I didn't use them. I ended up going with Pair Networks in the US. They've been faultless.

Yeh. That is annoying. I have one .com address registered with them and they provide me with much more service/updates concerning it, compared to my .co.uk's.

Try http://www.heartinternet.co.uk - excellent company, admitally not as good as 1and1 but as you are trying to get away from them try these. They are a sub-company of 123-reg!

Well I've just gone for Heart internet. The one tricky thing that makes it difficult to compare is the features on each registrar's control panel. (UKreg, LCN, uk2 don't have much info at all.) Heart internet had a demo, very nice. Other sites don't tell you much, though just-the-name is the pricy quality option. It seems that feature wise, 1and1 are actually pretty good

Heart also have a rare feature (as well as being cheap), each address can be set to forward to 3 different other addresses. Not sure exacly how I'm going to use it, maybe gmail and yahoo both get a copy of incoming mails.
