trying to restore iPod

so im trying to restore my ipod classic g3 and when I try to do it on my MacBook it says I need to use firewire so then I tried to do it on my old iMac with fire wire and it says the iPod server could not be contacted make. share your network settings and your network connection is active or try again later. does anyone know. what this means.

The error you're experiencing on your older iMac may be due to secure protocols having improved on Apple's servers and the older iTunes and iMac's operating system not being compatible. Expired security certificates on your older system may also be an issue.

Check that you can visit a basic website in a browser. If you can, then the above is most likely.

Also on your old Mac, check that the PRAM and/or main battery is not dead, preventing a correct current date. This I've found can prevent an older Mac from connecting to the web. Even if you don't have easy access to the battery, reset the date and re-attempt to connect.
