On eBay - bought two WD VR Thunderbolt Duos. One with two 1tb WD VR drives and one driveless. Paid $150 and $50.

Used the VR drives for about a year and decided to upgrade the drive and use the second Duo in a daisy chain.

I upgraded the drives:

DUO #1 Two Seagate IronWolf 10 TB drives in a Raid 1.

DUO #2 One WD 12TB White (RED) Drive and One WD 4TB Black Drive

The upgrade worked without a hitch. I got the 12TB on Black Friday sale at best buy for $169. It is from a WD Easystore USB 3 external HD which I shucked. I used it without the "PIN 3" power mod as it powers up and functions fine without it.

I am a little late to this party. About 4-5 years, but good things take time.

Just FYI for a Thunderbolt 2 solution for an external TB HDD dock with upgrade potential.
