1.1.4 not working after dowloading application

The touch screen works on home screen but when I open an application like calendar or ipod the touch screen stops working.
I can't reset the phone as I am in New Zealand and have an unlocked iphone on Vodafone network.
If anyone can help it would be much appreciated.
