I have a 15" MacBook Pro, mid 2014, with the Intel Iris Pro card. I'm thinking about getting a 4k external monitor, which I would run in the scaled resolution of 3008 x 1692 (6016 x 3384).

This should work, but according to some sources, the laptop may have hard time supporting the 4k display in this resolution since it has to render the image off-display in 6016x3384 and then downscale to 4k. I'm not too worried about the system performance (this is for work, mainly coding; not for gaming), but I'm concerned that the fan may start spinning and make noise. I wouldn't like that.

Are there people running this or similar setup? Could you please share your experience.

In case this wouldn't work, any ideas on what kind of hardware I should get to make it work. I need a Mac, but it doesn't necessarily need to be a laptop. It doesn't need to be new.

Thank you,
Jan
