1st gen case, 2nd gen AirPods?

Hello all,

I have a 1st gen case but 2nd gen AirPods and cannot seem to sync, I hold the button down (official case) yet nothing happens and the charge light does not change. When I close the case, the music still plays etc

Any ideas?
