I'm not sure what I'm going to do with my old Mac Pro but whatever it is I need a new monitor for it. It has always worked like a charm so before I go any farther I wanted to ask here which monitor will work for it best. I will only be using the monitor partially for adventure games such as Myst etc (that genre) so it doesn't need to be buggered powerful. I also don't want a cheap piece of potential junk either. As I started looking around I thought there may be some problems with the new monitors and the old Mac so I thought I better ask before I purchase a red herring. It doesn't have to be Apple! I just want one that I can hook up and use for a few old games and possibly a server for my home use. Right now the Mac is running Snow Leopard I believe. Of course, all of this depends on whether it still works or not. It should be fine as it has been well cared for.

Well it supported multiple 30" cinema displays.
A lot of monitors will work as perfect as on the fasted modern macs.

Screens are not really powerful.
Just different panels, size, resolution, ports
matt or glossy.

IPS is always welcome. Don't take a slow model for gaming.
Resolution, I prefer a 1920x1200 screen so much more over a full HD screen.
But most 1920x1200 today are specialised for graphic and color work,
and cost a lot more than a 27" screen.
Would not buy larger, forget 4k ... etc ...

Also, a dvi port is welcome I guess.

As long as you say in the compatible safe zone.
A decent monitor is dirt cheap.

Some second hand pro monitors, or refurbs could be nice.
I would avoid the matt Apple cinema displays,
mine still works as the day I bought it with my 1,1.
But they also have a special adapter, so if the adapter fails ...

It is fat, but I find it one of the most beautiful screens.
But I also love my more practical IIyama's, Benq, Eizo ...

But if you don't need a very dedicated monitor ( color correction, presentation ... ).
I think most are very fine.

I still use a 1,1 for my Epson printers, some legacy audio devices.
And it works better than when I bought it at the launch ( maxed ram, better and more hard drives ).
Different boot disks with Snow Leopard, not connected to the web.
Stuck on CS6.
Big chance It will outlast my 3.1, 6.1 ...

Hope this was any help, different needs, different screens.

2006 Mac Pro
Snow Leopard

Does not support much 4K cards.

The 3.1 can do it, with a GTX 680 or something.
With El Cap or something more modern than snow leopard.
And It's annoying as you can't log in on the 4K screen.
The faster ATI's lose some speed on a 3.1.

But he said 2006, Snow Leopard ... not a 12 core 5.1 ore something.

No worries, I have an old cMP from 2006 and it still works pretty well as media player, TM and FTP Server.
I have a 7950 running at 2560x1440 HiDPI (60Hz) and it works like a charm.
USB 3 works, although limited due to the PCIe speed, but still much faster then USB 2 or FW 800.
The only downside is that it's not quite energy-saving but neither are my cMP 5,1s.
