Resolved 2012 rMBP 15" crashing on Sonoma using OpenCore Legacy Patcher 1.0.1

I am not sure if there is a better place to post this (The OCLP Github page does not allow to submit any feedback), so I will try here. Using the latest available version of OCLP 1.0.1 and updated my 2012 rMBP 15" to Sonoma which worked great. But now it ends up crashing at least once a day.

Hoping that the next version of OCLP will fix that. In the meantime, where do I find the crashlogs so I can find out more? Anyone else experiencing this with OCLP 1.0.1 and macOS Sonoma? I wonder if it has to do with the eye candy in Sonoma, like the zoom in and out when you lock/unlock your Mac. Is there a way to turn this off? I already switched to a still wallpaper but it still happens. Thanks

My Mac no longer crashes now that I have updated to the nightly build OCLP 1.1.

I spoke to soon. This time it took over 30 hours for my Mac to crash though. Used to be less than 24 hours before. Sounds like support for 3802 based graphics card is still a work in progress for Sonoma...

UPDATE FIXED!

After using a newer nightly build of OCLP 1.1 and updating my Mac to the RC of macOS 14.1 no more crashes for the past two days. Yeah! 👍

Hi, how are things today regarding this crashes?
I'm typing this on 14.3 w/ OCLP 1.3 which I put on a new SSD on my MBP 9,1 (pretty much the same you have, I'd guess).
But I had 6 crashes since I migrated from the original SSD. They very much look like the one you posted.

I've had a previous installation from scratch, but with a case sensitive APFS, which Migration Assistant didn't like.

Alas, I can't tell if I would have had panics with this installation, I'm afraid the uptimes just were not long enough.
The last crash is about 30 hrs ago, so not sure what to make of it.

Thanks for the pointer!
It's sad, 10.14 is really outdated now and so much software doesn't work anymore.
But MBP 9,1 still is nice hardware (let alone the old native interfaces) and Sonoma is actually faster on this even with everything migrated (and potentially a load of rubbish which I should get rid of).

I'm also on a 9,1 and the only issue is this nagging WindowServer crash. Otherwise, everything works. Turning off Siri seemed to help a bit. But it still crashes. It just takes longer between crashes. Maybe OCL has something to do with it. If so, they'll have a fix soon enough.

Yeah, I still spoke too soon. Still crashing but typically I can go a number of days now, so at least there is some improvement... Just installed the nightly build from Feb 11 and will let you know how it goes.

Sorry for the late reply but I am happy to report that the issue is now resolved for me and it has been over a week.


Basically, I completely reimaged my machine from the ground up. Technically that is not correct, since I saved the Monterey partition for some old 32bit games that won't run on newer Macs. I used the OpenCore Legacy Patcher USB stick that I had made over a year ago which as it turns out still had the Ventura installer on it. So I first installed Ventura and then updated to Sonoma 14.4.1 and installed the OCLP patches and now everything seems perfectly fine. No more crashes, yeah!

Unfortunately that means that I do not know exactly what caused it. I know what fixed it but I cannot identify the culprit. Then again this Mac has seen better days: Speakers are broken - still work but sound terrible, second battery is on the fritz and the letter E on the keyboard is toast. Truth be told I use the latest and greatest M3 MacBook Air 15" from work for everyday affairs and use the old 2012 Retina MacBook Pro 15 mostly as a media server on my TV via VLC and screen share in from time to time. And even on the machine itself, I have a small mobile Logitech USB soundbar that sounds so much better than the original speakers and I have an external wireless Apple keyboard. Performance wise this 12 year old Mac still feels super snappy running Sonoma thanks to its 16GB of RAM and 1TB SSD. 12.5 years and counting. Not bad

Hallo to all, I run for 2 days Sonoma on my MBP 10.1 15" i7 mid 2012 With latest oclp version, now my Mac run Very very slowly, It is not usable, and funs are Always at Highest Speed. Reset pram and Smc, tray new battery but nothing changes....no one experienced this issue?
