27" 2011 iMac display vs new 27" 2560x1440 monitor

I was intending on converting a 27" 2011 iMac in to a monitor. I like the display, I'm on a budget and thought it would be less wasteful. It seems the controller boards for these displays have gone up in price and shipping is like 2 weeks to 2 months right now.

I'm wondering how a low end new monitor of same size and resolution would compare. They seem to come in around three times the price of the controller board. Would I expect them to be three times better? the same? worse?
