How can I create a drop shadow for a layer and make it go all around the layer or around the sides and bottom? A good example would be the Apple.com Mac OS X page or a Mac OS X window shadow.

Or instead of Drop Shadow use Outer Glow. Change screen to multiply and pick a dark color. ;)

better still... never use drop shadows at all. :p

Using a layer style of drop shadow in PS7+, set the angle to 90 degrees and tweak the Size setting while keeping the Distance & Spread settings at a minimum like this:
