iPod touch 5 gen is a paperweight since iOS 6.0.1

I made the mistake of upgrading to 6.0.1 when it became available.

Now iTunes (v. 10.7.0.21) freezes when it syncs. Every time, after several hours it says "Step 5 of 5 Waiting for items to copy" and stops. What's worse, the only way to stop it is to unplug the computer (Windows 7 64-bit).

I've tried to restore with no luck.
