So for the first time the other day I was impressed with 5g speeds. I was in Queens, NY at Arthur Ashe and the screen shot is what speed test said.

My question is, when is 5g gonna be like this all over and expand? When I find a 5g spot, its usually no faster then LTE speeds. And since I live in NJ and am in NY a lot, when are these areas that still say LTE gonna upgrade to 5g?

I have Verizon!

I would check with any Verizon news or blogs and their coverage map to see if they’re expanding their coverage in New York.

5G transmitters have short range and “many” transmitters have to be set up to cover even the smallest city. Not sure it will ever cover all the suburban areas.

Haha probably never, 6G will be out before you start getting decent 5G everywhere, it’s always been like that with these cellular technologies. They can’t sit still and concentrate on making one cover all places. When they do decide to push one tech it’s to make it cover rural areas when its old and been replaced by the newer tech to save money on pushing the newer tech into rural areas.

You're most likely seeing mmWave 5G in Queens. This type of 5G is extremely fast, but is very short range and requires a radio at nearly every street corner. You'll never see this outside of a major city. 5G everywhere else uses a much lower frequency where the signal can cover miles instead of feet, but is also substantially slower.

I'm not sure anyone can answer when 5G will be available everywhere. Call Verizon and ask them to stop slacking in your area :)

I think we all got spoiled by LTE. When it released it was definitely a wow moment in terms of speed and it seemed like it was everywhere very quickly. Like others have said, to get decent speeds out of 5G you have to have transmitters all over the place. I rarely see 5G speeds over 100 Mbps.

You’re asking a question that no one here can answer. Best to call the carrier.

Some time after 2024. The government fumbled on 5G deployment and focused on mmWave. The meat of 5G is in mid-band (some of which is called C-band) and was auctioned late which means late spending and building of towers.

Were you at AEW Grand Slam? 🧐

I live in Dallas and just turned off 5G in my celluar data settings this past week. I feel like the 5g network here is super congested and I actually get better service and speeds when it's turned off.

I’m on T-Mobile in Los Angeles. I have noticed on multiple occasions that my iPad on LTE is really slow (sub 1 Mbps up/down), so I connect to my phone’s hotspot and in the same location the 5G is super fast (200 Mbps+). I’m not sure if this is just due to the concentration of LTE vs 5G devices in that location, or possibly T-Mobile decommissioning LTE or otherwise reducing capacity over LTE.

I think the whole 5G thing was way overhyped. I don’t do a lot of downloading or uploading. When I do it is usually at home on WiFi. 5G does not make my phone calls or text messages and faster so I can’t really see how 5G is helping me. I think 5G is mainly building the infrastructure for government use.

Many times here in Miami with AT&T LTE faster than 5G speeds. Therefore I've switched 5G off. I have super fast speeds at home Wi-Fi and office Wi-Fi.
Only good time is when UW is available, which seems to be a little more frequent lately. The one annoying thing is they said all about how 5G would alleviate slowness with dense concurrent users, but the concert we were at revealed that was a lie.

I’d say 2040 in the UK. It’s still practically non existent outside major cities, and even when the 5G symbol does pop up, it’s indistinguishable from 4G and often has speeds of 10mbits

100% Agree.

I did a couple tests earlier here in Bath… two ends of the same street. Some minutes apart.

Yes, it was 5G, but FFS. 🤣

@arkitect -- Interesting numbers--looks like it's hard for data to go upstream when the downstream flow is faster. Why is the upload speed is 18 times higher at 14:13 spot but and at the same time .18 download speed. Is there a coincidence with 18 and .18?

Very strange, I would think that the base number would be 42.😧

Some very strange results, I agree. 🙂

There seems to be no rhyme or reason to this…

The government fumbled on 5G deployment and focused on mmWave.

It wasn't the government, it was Verizon and AT&T that made that bad decision. The consequence is that T-Mobile now has the fastest average 5G in the states.

Verizon and AT&T are trying to put more emphasis on midband but they may never catch up with T-Mobile.

Except in many areas they just don't crush anything. Dual sim in my phone, one Verizon LTE coverage in my rural area and T Mobile 5G.

In almost every situation Verizon LTE is faster than T Mobile 5G in my location.....
