You probably know about this already: 10.4.4 to 10.4.6 also default to reading out the brand string if they don’t recognise the CPU.
indeed, it was a common patch to use their loginwindow I think it was, to get 10.4.7+ to behave the same way also :)

you will see it if you play with a period tiger hackintosh distro as one of the patches in the install options :)

as otherwise you would either get "Unknown" for the CPU type, or worst still the window server would crash if you went to about this mac

Ah yep. 10.4.7 Server's System Profiler has the "Dual Core Intel Placeholder" bit:
