WinterMute, interesting point on the oversampling for archival. I did not know that. Any links you recommend to related info?

I'd start with the AES maybe, or perhaps the Producers/engineers wing of the Grammys Academy.

There are a few books on the subject, and Dr. John Watkinson has a lot to say on the subject of digital recording in "The Art of Digital Audio".

It's a bit of a grab-bag really, and slightly outside my field, but there should be more info around now.
