AirPods battery level on OS X 10.11

I have the AirPods connected to a Mac running OS X 10.11.6, using the regular Bluetooth pairing. Everything works great, but I can't see the battery level percentage of the AirPods. It does show for the Magic Keyboard and Trackpad that are also connected via Bluetooth.

Are people running macOS 10.12 Sierra seeing the percentage?

Yes, the Bluetooth menu shows the battery percentages. But the Case's battery percentage is shown only when at least one Pod is in the case and the lid is open. It's the same in iOS as well.
