I sometimes network my G5 desktop with my G4 PowerBook over my Airport connection, to transfer files, etc.

Recently I noticed an odd thing with this setup. Using leopard.

On the G5 desktop, I select the PowerBook (which shows up in the "Shared" portion of the Finder window sidebar). I click the "Connect As..." button and enter my username and password. I gain access to the PowerBook.

So far so good.

Then, I click the "Disconnect" button in the G5 desktop Finder. It disconnects from the PowerBook.

Then, I click the "Connect As..." button again. At this point, I find that, as long as I enter the username correctly, I can then enter any password I like and gain access.

Is this right? Why is this?

I have to restart the G5 desktop to rectify the problem.

Just a hunch, but I believe that your keychain is coming into play here. Nothing to worry about, imo.
