I'm looking at MacBook Pro Edu pricing (Irish), and it seems there is only a 20euro difference between:
  1. M3, 8-core CPU, 10-core GPU, 16GB Unified Memory, 1TB SSD Storage = €2,379.00
  2. M3Pro, 11-core CPU, 14-core GPU, 18GB Unified Memory, 512GB SSD Storage = €2,399.00
I get part of this is the difference in SSD size, but surely the M3Pro is a far better machine (more cores & ram, and a better processor) for a similar price?

So the far more powerful machine is the M3Pro, right? (Assuming I don't need the 1TB storage). Or am I missing something obvious?

It is indeed the far better machine; in terms of raw power it's ridiculously good.

That said, the prices make sense when you remember just how much Apple loves to overcharge for storage and RAM. 😅

I might quibble on the use of 'far', but yes, the M3Pro is as good and often better at all things than the M3. You aren't missing anything except that for some people that don't have demanding tasks and hence would never take advantage of the extra cores, the twice the SSD size might be the driving factor. Keep in mind, the single core speed is essentially the same so programs that don't take advantage of multi processing wont run that much faster.

If you do some configurations you will find those small price differences all the time. Only a few bucks more here only a few bucks more there.
So for a bit more and you geht the M3 pro with 1TB SSD. Ah if you spend a little more you get the 16" and so on...
Tim Cook is a genius in selling. :)

Apple rubs their hands together when you buy their SSD.

The M3 Pro is a more well rounded machine in terms of features and performance.
