Looks cool mainly. I have mine mounted in the bathroom, where it monitors my toilet paper dispensing situation (the toilet roll holder hangs under it) and also provides some useful blinking lights for these dark night-time trips.

What does an Xserve do? I know its a server but what can it do? sorry about this question but i dont know much about these things.
