I've been a PC gamer all my life but now I'm thinking of switching to Mac gaming. My friend gave me his old Powerbook G4 (only 512MB RAM) for me to use in learning how to use a Mac until I decide on what system I'll eventually buy. Does anyone have good recommendations on games that still work well on a Powerbook G4?

First of all, your friend kicks serious ass for giving you a PowerBook G4  IMO it's Apples best laptop design (12-17¨).

Games? I'd say Cave Story (2D Platformer, free), Halo will work, Unreal Tournament 2004 will work better.
I didn't play many games on my PowerBook

What's the speed of the PB?

I can play Call of Duty/2 series (demo), Myst, Prey (demo), Savage, No One Lives Forever series, Redline, EV Nova, Wingnuts (demo), the Aliens series, um... and more but can't think of them at the moment.

have fun.

Two Words. Warcraft III. You'll love it and it'll run great, a bit dated but awesome. I still play it regularly. You can pick the battlechest up for around 35 bucks.

mac games...

Glad you asked...

I would like to re/introduce people to the game called Red Faction.

http://www.apple.com/games/articles/2001/10/redfaction/

It's a FPS and has had many custom maps made by users. ( I recommend them, as most people rarely play the standard maps anymore...certianly get the microfaction maps. You're the size of a mouse in a giant room/arena. Check the link for maps and forums:

http://redfaction.levels4you.com/

It has many servers - it was even designed to run on a 56k as well...that's why some of the old school graphics persist... unlike Doom or UT or Quake... but fun and cool nonetheless!!!

It features something called GeoMod (geographical modification - which means you can carve tunnels with a rocket launcher/C4... make your own sniping spot!) It was made in 1998 (I believe) and I play this everyday still.

If you can't find an original version on ebay:

PC version---
http://www.zs-clan.com/downloads/RED FACTION SETUP.exe

Mac version---
http://mac.sofotex.com/downloads/d126724.html

Do a little googling and learn a little about it. I will say though, you may want an external mouse...I hear the trackpad is tough.

Anyway...say howdy if you get it... my nickname is "Bird"

Other mac games I've enjoyed: Halo, Doom 3, Quake 4, and Bejeweled.

Sod off
Warcraft 3, Diablo II (with OS X installer patch).

KOTOR and Call of Duty run pretty well on my 15" PB G4 w/1.25GB RAM and the Mobility Radeon 9700, but it might be a stretch on anything slower.

There are quite a lot - depends on your PB specs. I usually recommend going to the reviews at InsideMacGames, which are listed chronologically - in other words, further back you go, easier the spec requirements should get. Early 2006 and earlier should run OK, depending on your PB.

Civ, Rise of Nations, AvP2...all are good, all might run well.

Look for the Freespace 2 thread here on MR to find a great, free game.

 It depends on which PBG4 we're talking about! My Titanium (800Mhz) can technically run Halo but... no. You can't play it the way it runs. UT2004 isn't too great either. Warcraft III runs fine though. Quake 3 (and similar games) will run well. World of Warcraft runs if you turn the graphics way down.
