Jobs explains it in the 3G iphone introduction, I'm sure there have been threads posted here with more info. Basically, it's apple's way of keeping your programs up-to-date without having them running, and yes, it will be free

Just so I'm clear -- If i'm using the AIM client, and I open something else (ie. mail or safari), I will NOT receive any notification that I received any IMs until I open AIM again? Does it even show any number indicator (badge) next to the AIM icon before I open it?

Nope, no badge. That would require push.

So in the description of the AIM app, it says "send and receive messages over WiFi, EDGE, or 3G networks."

That means that messages count as data and not as texts, right?
