I have read all the documentation on Mac Mame and I still get this thing to work. I got to the point where I can get the GUI to come up. However it shows no ROMS even though I put some in there, including the freebies that are on the mame.org web site.

I even try command line, then I get that it can't fine ROMs that are in the zip file, that are in there (including the freebies).

I am so confused right now, I will like to get this working so if anyone is willing to help with it I would appreciate it! :)

Thanks!

Are you using SDLMAME?

The way that works can be a pain, the paths are relative, not absolute, so launching it from the command line vs double clicking the icon will actually be read differently. You can also edit the ini file that comes with it to point to an absolute path, so your roms will be picked up.

Let me know if you have any help doing that.

Just use OpenEmu. I think it still requires using the experimental version.

I found this app called M46 from on this web site: http://bamf2048.github.io/sdl_mame_tut/

This solved the issue that I could not figure out how to lunch SDLMAME with it seeing the ROMS.

Now I have a problem, there are a few games that I would want it to use the Mouse instead of the keyboard or USB Controller. I've gone in where you can remap out the keys, but I can not find out how to configure it to use the mouse. Gun games I want it to use the mouse and there a few others.

Eric5h5: I would use OpenEmu, I love OpenEmu but MAME Roms on OpenEmu video flash, very annoying, and sometimes they don't run at full speed on OpenEmu vs SDLMAME. :/

Thanks! :)

I used to use this without to much trouble - http://mameosx.sourceforge.net/

As much as I like OpenEmu, for MAME, it's really not the best option: the MAME version is quite outdated, and it's missing crucial features like the option to set (virtual) dip switches and analog controls (necessary for racing games, for instance). And the developers of OpenEmu are very stubbornly set against implementing these features – for what reason ever.

MAME OS X was great, but is unfortunately dead as nails. I'm not sure if it even still works under recent versions of macOS.

Give RetroArch a try. It has a much more up to date Mame core than OpenEmu, and has a variety of shaders to enhance the image.

Oooh MAME - that takes me back. Good to know there's still people into it. IIRC even a working mouse control works poorly with some games that expect joystick control - you can hold a joystick right for longer than a mouse.
[doublepost=1505398932][/doublepost]Had a quick look and got the latest version working fine.

1. Go to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MAME which tells me the latest version (currently 0.189, released 10 days ago) and the official website is now http://mamedev.org/

2. Go to http://mamedev.org/, click on OSX, get a choice of hosted binaries, go to http://choccyhobnob.com/mame/mame/

3. Download the latest osx binary, 0.189 in this case. Open zip, find mame64, click on it, sort out GateKeeper if required, see Mame64 crash to desktop.

4. Realise a framework is needed. Go to https://www.libsdl.org/download-2.0.php , (or if you are reading this in 2018+, whatever the latest framework is) download the OSX/ macOS binary, open the package and put the framework in the right place, as the instructions say.

5. Launch mame64 again. Success. Need to manually set up the ROM directory path in the in-app options menu. After that, it finds roms no problem and plays games fine.
