I recall on the keynote one of the presenters saying that now when you download free apps you don't need to put your password in once you've update to iOS 6. Well it's still asking me for a password when downloading free apps!

They're still needed for free downloads. It's updates where you no longer need to enter the password.

Here's what happens:

Updating apps - no login needed
Downloading previously downloaded/purchased apps - no login needed
Downloading a new paid/free app - login needed

Go into settings
Tap on iTunes & App store
Tap on password settings
and at the bottom should be an option saying require password switch it off and download an app :p
