Hopefully, Apple won't have a problem in China come January...

Biden and gang are just as protectionist if not more. The only difference is the words they will choose. He will end so tariffs that get us in trouble with the WTO (Steel) but he didn't flip the rust belt on promises of opening up China trade. The TPP will likely come back in effect but that is more for the rest of the Pacific area. He will end the trade issues between the EU, Canada, and the US, however.

The simple fact is, we should require Apple to leave China over its treatment of Muslims and Hong Kong. Apple which loves to scream from the safety of the top of Apple One how they support human rights needs to be called out and called out often

Apple won't have a problem in China in January as all of the Biden family money is from China, but it will take lots of time to undo all of the sanctions with a mixed Congress. Also, Apple has had these plans in the works for some time, so they won't cancel them just to stay in China and waste money. Remember, Tim Cook is a former CFO? He's doesn't make decisions like this unless they are sound financially for Apple.

Apple has asked Foxconn to move some of its iPad and MacBook assembly from China to Vietnam in an effort to minimize the impact of ongoing trade tensions between the U.S. and China, according to sources cited by Reuters.

Apple has been seeking to add geographic diversity to its supply chain for some time now, and Apple suppliers already assemble the company's AirPods and AirPods Pro in Vietnam.

Apple is also reportedly seeking to expand iPhone production in Vietnam, although a report in August suggested the company was holding off until workers' conditions improve at supplier Luxshare-ICT's facilities.

Major Apple manufacturing contractors Foxconn, Pegatron, and Compal Electronics are all said to be expanding production in Vietnam as companies seek to reduce reliance on China and diversify supply chains to prevent concentration risks.

Vietnam is emerging as a major manufacturing and assembly hub for large technology companies, and Samsung manufactures as many as half of its smartphones there already.

Because they are an authoritarian country who has millions of people in concentration camps, is trying to kill democracy in Hong Kong and Taiwan, continues to be aggressive militarily in South China Sea, has dangerous viruses coming out of their country regularly including covid. The government of China is trash and until they shape up business should cut ties

Is this America or China you're talking about?

Complain about your own governments. The US triggered wars in Iraq and Syria that cost 100s of 1000s of civilian lives.

I don't want yanks making my MacBook Pro thanks.
You do have a point. Tesla Model 3s made at the China Gigafactory have better initial quality than the ones made in the US. Maybe because of the plant, the workers, or a combination, but the difference is real.

Trump paid more taxes to China than the USA. Why dont you let that sink in, and use that as an indicator as to who has more money and self-interest tied up in China.

Just because Trump tells you something via Twitter, doesn’t make it true. All politicians have money tied to foreign countries and the stock market. Don’t be fooled into thinking Biden is the only one. Don’t hate the player, hate the game. We should be striving to push policy that prevents politicians from having foreign investments (or investments at all, IMO).

I got a better idea. How about moving the assembly to the United States and the upper mangers all take a slight pay cut to pay for it? :p
How many times more expensive do you think manufacturing in US is and how much do you think higher management is earning? You can even answer in percentage or even approximate numbers. Since you are suggesting ideas to a business, I hope you have some numbers to back it up?

Thats true - and my Model S has pretty naff build quality, although it's probably mostly made by Mexicans from over the border to be fair.

Cost of labor is significantly cheaper in Vietnam, thats really the reason for moving there.
Bigger reason is probably the trade agreement Vietnam has with India. India has a 20% tariff on smartphones, and 15% on smartphone parts. But if you produce smartphone components in Vietnam and ship them to your smartphone factories in India you pay 0% tariff.

Because the US doesn’t have the workforce, skill, or infrastructure to do large scale electronic manufacturing.

And it would cost more than small exec pay cuts.

About time Tim Cook does what's best for national and world security vs thinking only about profit.

Are you a triggered Chinese?

As a German, I can tell you we are glad people around the world cared about what was going on in Europe and the US eventually stopped the Nazis. I hope the world will do the same with the Chinese Communists soon.

I was in Vietnam for a few weeks this time last year, and overheard a team of Taiwanese discussing their business in a Hanoi bar. Me being white but understanding Mandarin confuses people, so they didn't bother hiding what they were saying.

They didn't say which company they worked for, but their plan was to open a warehouse in Vietnam so they could ship components made in China, wrap/assemble them and add a "assembled in Vietnam" label which they said got around US imposed China sanctions. This was back in 2019, so maybe the same trick still works.

Vietnam is "less communist" and certainly a better environment to do business in. The govt interferes much less and the internet (and hence access to news) is much more open than in China.
