So, I traded in an iPhone along with my 13 Pro Max purchase yesterday at an Apple Store in person and this is how it showed up on my Apple Card today:

Why does my daily cash adjustment get dinged for a phone that I sold to Apple? Is this something I can dispute with Apple Card or just something I need to accept? (It's not a refund, it's Apple paying me for the phone that I traded in).

Thanks!

They're sticking to it despite it being a solo trade in. Oh well, not that $23.70 kills me but seems a little weird. I think next time I'll have it go to my debit card instead of the Apple Card so I don't get a daily cash adjustment ding.

Goldman Sachs customer service leaves A LOT to be desired. Did you originally purchase your trade in iPhone with the Apple Card. That can somewhat explain the cash back ding. Otherwise I would recommend escalating to a manager.

$23 or $2,300, it’s money that belongs to you.

Yeah, I did an Apple Payment Plan in 2020. I was wondering if I mixed something up. I guess if they upfront the Apple Daily Cash (3%) for the entire phone they feel that they have a right to some of it on the return sale?

If I had selected the Debit Card - I wonder if the Daily Cash would still have taken a ding? - I'll have to try it next time (if I upgrade next year) lol.

Thanks for your help.

That's not how that should be handled. I would take that up with Goldman . . .

I’m pretty sure that’s what happened. When you paid upfront for the 13 Pro Max, you automatically get a the Daily Cash for the whole iPhone. Since you’re also trading in the 12 Pro Max, they adjusted the daily cash. They did this to me as well when I traded in the 12 Pro Max online. It seems like it’s a normal thing too when you go on the Apple Card subreddit.

You should be able to get that daily cash adjustment reversed. I also did that successfully with one phone call and couple of escalations. Apple and GS have been taking advantage of customers not knowing their rights and will continue to do so unless people call them out for such malpractice. The daily cash adjustment would have been valid had Apple issued you a refund / credit for the same device for which you received the original cashback. The $790 refund is for trade in of a different device, you simply sold that device back to Apple and got paid for it. You could have gotten paid in the form of say an Apple gift card, in which case there is no question of cash adjustment.

when one trades in a phone at the Apple Store, can he/she opt to receive a physical Apple Gift Card? then use that gift card to pay for the purchase of a new phone or whatever they sell in the store?

Yep, definitely. I've done this with a MacBook trade in this year.

This is happening to me right now. Just got my refund for my trade-in over the weekend. As someone said: Goldman / Apple Card customer service leaves a lot to be desired. This is a scam for sure.

I just had this happen to me with trading in my iPhone 14 Pro Max.

This definitely does not seem legit. It’s not like I’m returning a product. I’m selling something I own to Apple.

It’s a small amount, but I hate being ripped off 🤬

I notice they do this on any credit by default. :/ So now I make sure to ask for a gift card or apply it to a transaction if I'm doing one at the same time. Won't be asking for a CC credit if given the option. lol.

To be fair of the transaction lists refund so I can see why they would think it was a return

I’m in chat with them right now on iMessage. So far they transferred me to a specialist twice so I’m on the third person.

I didn’t see an option when I bought my iPhone to receive a gift card instead. Did I just overlook it?

If they’re going to take most of the cash back, I got for making the purchase it doesn’t even make sense to use the Apple card.

It wasn't an option that I saw. I was offered one in store. I usually trade in store only if I can especially with the shipping horror stories I've seen here recently.

And agreed.

I bought a MacBook earlier this year - traded one in - in the store. They offered to credit to the CC, give me an Apple Card, or apply it to the transaction I was doing at the time. I chose to do Apple Card and then walked out - applied it to a laptop purchase the next week.

So yeah I avoid any "credit back to card" option. Cuz they will take a daily adjustment back with that. Even if you didn't buy the item with the Apple CC.

Can you still do that with pre-orders that you order online?

After an hour long iMessage chat being transferred to three different people and having to explain the same thing three different times all I get is they have initiated dispute and they’ll make a decision within 90 days 🤦‍♂️… yeah I’m definitely not going to do trade-ins with the money going back on the Apple Card ever again

Good question. I do not know. Lol. And I imagine it probably depends on the Apple Store too. Cuz I hear some aren’t accepting trade ins either.

This is how Apple handles it regardless of getting the trade in credit at time of purchase or later as a refund. When I purchased my MacBook Pro with a MacBook trade in, I received an instant credit of $800, so the purchase price of the computer was $1700 instead of $2500. I only received cash back on the $1700 price. It certainly is a crummy way to handle it, but it does make sense. I paid $1700, so I should only get cash back on $1700.

Same goes for a refund trade in. You effectively paid $790 less, so you should not get cash back on that $790.

If you don't buy it with the Apple Card, the "refund" should not be going back to the Apple Card. Apple is supposed to refund the payment method for the trade in based on the payment method of the new device. When I did my iPad trade in, they didn't ask where I wanted to get the refund, it automatically went back to my card that I purchased the iPad with.
