Hi all,

I was just wondering: is there an actual difference in what you get when you purchase a “Mastered for iTunes”/“Apple Digital Master” album from the iTunes Store, vs. what you get when you take a lossless album and convert it to 256 AAC? Just curious. I see the “Apple Digital Master” tag on a lot of albums in the store and am just wondering what that really means; is there something special about these versions of the lossy tracks vs. what you’d come up with on your own or what you might hear or stream on another lossy service (Amazon, Spotify, etc.)? Sorry if this is a dumb question. Thanks.

EDIT: Or is it just a set of guidelines for the initial mastering of an album? As in, certain criteria were followed when the album was prepared to begin with, and therefore converting an imported CD down to 256 AAC would give you the same thing as the “Apple Digital Master” that is in the store?
