The same happens in France, while using the CarPlay. In the main window the road markings have new styles, but in the black directions box they are still old.

It seems that Apple has just updated them. Could you confirm?

So iOS 15.6 came out a few days ago, and didn’t improve anything in CarPlay on my end.

So you got the same issue that Maps is stuck in the "high" mode and wont show 3D buildungs (just for a second in the intersection top down view)? I did everything including resetting the phone but I wont get it to work. I have this issue since 15.4.

Here you can see the bug(?).. after the roundabout the map went into the default view but it woudnt show 3D buildings even tho I was not on the Autobahn.

I don't think that's necessarily a bug. Even here in America, on specific rural roads that connect different towns, the zoom level is just outside of the range of showing buildings, even though it's not a highway.

But no, that's not the issue I'm having. My issue is with how CarPlay sizes itself to my car's screen, and won't show road markings while driving. (I'm in New York City, which has the super detail.)

I *will* be renting two cars next month. One for a trip through Illinois and Iowa, and then in Vegas. I'll see how CarPlay displays things in those vehicles.

It behaves exactly the same for me in France, when going through not so densely populated areas. My own understanding of it was that when we approach roundabouts Maps automatically shift their plane from “looking ahead” (with 3D effects) to “looking from above” (no 3D effects). The contours of the buildings in 3D would briefly flash as the Maps change their display angle, then disappear again. I thought it was a “normal” behaviour, but then again, we only got the new Maps in July 2022 here.

You can do that, but the zoom returns to normal levels after a turn or highway maneuver.

Yes, it appears that there are two elements involved:

1) zooming (the closer in you get, the more detail is displayed, as expected);

2) the view angle (bird vs ahead) - 3D outlines of the buildings pop up and can then disappear during the transitions between these two angles. Under normal zoom (set by the Maps) we get more 3D elements in the ahead view.

Well but I never get the 3D buildings that way. Not in the city and not on country roads. If I use my iPhone without carplay it will always show them. I will test it with other iPhones tomorrow and well see how this goes.

A very impressive win for Apple Maps 2 in France last night!

There was a fire in the tunnel, completely blocking one direction of traffic, with another one going a bit slower (mine). When I set off, I was about 45 min (90 km) drive away from the affected area, so was checking AM, Google & Waze in CarPlay. Initially both AM & Waze were telling me to get off the highway before the slow-down, with Google saying to stick to the usual route. As I was getting closer, however, and most of the traffic was diverted away from the area, creating its own congestion, AM popped up a suggestion that a quicker (and shorter) route was available.

So yesterday AM were really on the ball in real time, actively feeling the traffic around and coming up with good suggestions. All in their usual smooth and good looking way. Well done! 👍

Thank you. Good news but this should have been done as soon as the new map data was released.

Ideally, yes, but I am actually happy to see Apple are still actively working on them even though Maps V2 were just released. They could also have sat back and done nothing much, thinking “mission accomplished”. This small evolution, however, shows us that they keep on improving them behind the scenes. ✌️

That's interesting. I haven't noticed any camera-related changes of late. (Unfortunate, because I really miss my old "Camera B" mode.) While navigating in CarPlay on my super-wide widescreen, I don't see lane markings and such unless I'm about to make a turn, or I'm on the highway and the camera switches to the junction view approaching an exit. It has something to do with the widescreen orientation...Maps needs to zoom out a bit more than usual so you can see ahead of where you're driving, and the default zoom level is *just* outside the range of road markings appearing.

After the update to iOS 15.6.1 the other day, I *maybe* noticed a subtle change in how Maps looks on CarPlay while navigating.

In cities with the ultra details, buildings are colored as they roughly appear in real life. As you zoom out, the color gradually shifts to the standard gray. If you zoom in again, the color gradually returns. Prior to this update, the building colors weren't very clear while navigating on CarPlay, despite not being zoomed out very far. They were too subtle. Now on iOS 15.6.1, it appears to my eyes that the colors are popping just a bit more.

Also, I believe the Maps team is working on updating all of the unique parkway shields in the New York area. One or two were updated recently. Then I commented to them about how the shields within New York City were different from the shields in Westchester County. Then one day recently, all of the shields vanished, and they haven't returned.

I wish they'd update the 3D models of the bridges here, since only a few select bridges have real 3D models. I'd like the remaining bridges to get the same treatment. Right now, the Bronx-Whitestone Bridge and Throgs Neck Bridge look like cheap knockoffs of the Bay Bridge in San Francisco.

EDIT - Also, when I updated my phone to iOS 15.6.1, I immediately received a notification from Apple Maps saying "Cycling Direction Now Available -- Get cycling directions across the U.S. that show elevation, and let you avoid busy roads." First time I've seen that message.

Anyone else having serious Maps glitches the last few days?

I'm finding, during my regular drive home from work, for instance, that Maps is trying to literally turn me around and have me go back they way I came, rotating the map to face the way I came, and other weird things like that. It always happens around the same physical places, too. But it never USED TO happen, so I'm thinking it can't be cell tower interference or something.

I've rebooted my phone and it didn't make a difference.

I'm assuming this is back-end related due to prep work for iOS 16 (note: I'm using up to date iOS 15 on affected phone).

Just me? Anyone?

yep, also notice a strange thing where maps suddenly thinks it's not allowed to go straight and an intersection and proposes to go right for a couple of km's to then come back to the same intersection and make a right again (~ going straight instead of making the first right). This never happened before, and there were also no road works or anything else ongoing at that intersection... I hope it signals the arrival of the new maps in Belgium (yet I hope this issue is not part of the new maps ;-) )

I drove my usual route home yesterday with Google Maps and it DID THE SAME THING IN THE SAME SPOTS. So it's gotta be a cell tower/GPS issue.

No, it’s not your phone. It’s Maps. Strange things often happen in the weeks leading up to a brand new iOS release.

I’ve been seeing highway shields appearing on the wrong highways, road name labels disappearing while driving, and Maps suddenly believing I was driving on an adjacent road where it has never happened before.

I am currently on a two-week trip. Flew into Chicago, spending three days in the suburbs here, then driving to Iowa to spend a week with family there. Then driving back to Chicago, flying to Vegas, and spending a few days there.

I rented a BMW X5 that has Apple CarPlay on a fairly large screen. So I’ll be keeping an eye on things over the next two weeks. So far, seems to be the smaller POI icons like my regular car.

iOS 16 is here, and so is the City Experience for Las Vegas and Chicago! I’m already in Vegas, so here are some driving shots.

Almost every major hotel on The Strip (including the off-Strip Rio) is fully modeled! Very nice so far. Haven’t tried the multi-stop routing yet.

I’m pretty sure at this point that my car’s screen is limiting my Maps detail on CarPlay. Definite lack of vertical space. I believe Maps wants you to see a certain distance ahead of you, and so Maps in my car is zooming out just enough that I lose all road markings detail. Would help if that “Camera Mode B” would return, but I don’t see that happening at this point.
