Apple Remote with Spotify?

Does anyone know a way to get the apple remote to work with spotify? I tried Spotify mac remote but it doesn't appear to work, at least not on 10.7.2. It just made the apple remote stop functioning at all when spotify was open.

(typical behavior right now is that up and down change the volume, like they should, but left and right, and play/pause just open itunes and start controlling that.) I want them to control spotify.

does anyone have or know of a solution for this right now? I didn't intend for my $20 remote to be a glorified powerpoint clicker.

I will try it out, but I'm looking for something simpler. It literally only needs to take the controls on my remote and make them work in spotify. I mean, the hardware buttons on my MBP work, so why don't the ones on the remote? it doesn't make sense.
