Might as well call alcoholism a pandemic as well.
Alcoholism is a addiction. Like smoking, porn, and buying every known ear buds Apple makes. To declare a 'war on alcoholism' would be off unless it also addressed the mental causes of addiction. I've known people that were alcoholics that changed to caffeinated drinks, smokers that switched to candies, etc. So ADDICTION is epidemic. How does addiction compare to HIV? It doesn't.

No offense, HIV/AIDS is not a pandemic.

how is hiv/aids not a pandemic?

“an outbreak of a disease that occurs over a wide geographic area (such as multiple countries or continents) and typically affects a significant proportion of the population”

i suppose if you want to quibble about what a “significant proportion of the population is”?

Might as well call alcoholism a pandemic as well.

alcoholism, as tragic as it can be, is not a communicable disease

Aids without contact or use of condoms is not contagious either.

there are many ways to contract hiv other than sex without condoms

there are also many circumstances under which people have sex without condoms when that is not their choice

There's nothing to quibble about. It does not spread person to person via simple being next to each other. there are also effective ways to prevent AIDS transmission, unlike an airborne virus we have been battling for the past two years. So let's not confuse the two.

And it does not affect a significant proportion of the population, because if it did you'd know a few dozen people who either had or died of it.

Aids is mostly the result of a poor personal safety; making poor choices. Alcoholism is also the result of poor choices.

Maybe by the numbers it is an epidemic. But without contact, unlike coronavirus, aids is not usually transmitted.

What are those many ways? It is possible through blood transfusions and open wounds where one party has aids. But that is through direct contact with blood. What are other ways?

Forced sex?

no one is confusing the two, you are merely misusing the word pandemic

also, your definition of significant is arbitrary

so you’ve identified one way that is not a result of “poor personal safety”

rape, sex work, unavailability of clean syringes are some others that immediately come to mind

it is certainly easy for one of privilege to assume these things all come down to personal choice. unfortunately for many people marginalized by gender, race, class, sexual orientation and geography -among other factors- it is not so simple

They all amount to contact though, while you are attempting to get the root cause of the contact and in fact say that sitting on the perch of privilege one can't understand why another could use a dirty syringe. That's a topic for another day, another thread.

what is your point exactly than?

is it not contact = personal choice?

this is the premise with which i take issue and why i gave several examples of contact that are not personal choice.

you have made it the topic of this thread on this day, not i

Regardless, there probably is some research to show the majority of aids transmissions is through unsafe, personal choice practices including dirty syringes, which was my point.

if there is “probably some research” than cite that research. i imagine it would show that the majority of hiv transmission occurs among marginalized communities

dirty syringes are not generally a choice but rather a lack of choice; not to mention rape, infected blood transfusions, dangerous sex work necessitated by poverty, living in countries with high rates of hiv, and countless other ways people become infected with hiv

i’ve spent a significant amount of time in the past banging my head against the wall of far right bigotry, ignorance, sexism, classism, racism, homophobia and transphobia that permeates the macrumors forums

this seems like yet another example of that phenomenon
It may seem like another example but it's not. This may shed some light:

Uhm, this is Brandon territory. All woke. Apple users tend to vote for Brandon, be concerned about "climate", adher to a vegan lifestyle, and wish everyone happy holidays. I guess that's far right for the ultrafar left Antifa.
