On my Hisense tv other apps, HBO max Prime etc, report an hdr /Dolby vision resolution of 3840x2160p. Which is what you'd expect for full 4k resolution The apple tv plus resolution is running at 3840x1920p. Why is apple tv not running at full resolution. Any ideas?

Aspect ratio is different. First one is 1.78 the second one is 2.0.

Check your settings on the AppleTV.

This is the apple tv plus app I'm talking about. I don't have an apple tv. The aspect ratio on my TV is the same for all sources. That's why I'm wondering why all 4k sources are reported at 3840x2160 but the apple tv plus is a lesser 3840x1920. Do you or anyone know why?

It depends on the aspect ratio of the actual content. If it's not 16:9, it makes no sense to encode black bars.

The content on HBO etc often has big black bars for movies etc. But it still reports 3840x2160 whether there's bars or not. Apple tv plus always reports 3840x1920. I guess I'm never going to know why 🙂

I think people still think I'm talking about apple tv. I'm talking about the apple tv plus app. I'm getting the resolution info from my Hisense tv
