macOS Applying diacritics (dead keys) to an NSEvent keydown event

I'm getting keydown events in a Metal/OpenGL window, and I need to get the diacritics applied on them.

I have searched the net for this, and found relevant replies like this one or like this other one. But I see these approaches are Carbon-based (and, to be honest, I tend to believe that the task of getting the diacritics applied should be much simpler than that. So, the question is, is there any modern approach simpler than those?
