Audio Software Recommendation?

Here is what i want to do:

Transfer DAT or Audio Cassettes into my imac. Edit the sound files, and save the file sin either mp3 or WAV formats. It seems that Apple software only provides AAC options, am I wrong?

Are you using garage band? I think it will export to iTunes as a AIFF, then it can be converted there to WAV or mp3. Just change your import settings and the new option will appear under the Advanced pull down.

Try Audacity, it is totally free and easy to use.

It is free, but a pain in the arse to use in my opinion. Give us Adobe Audition!
