Hmm looks pretty odd to me. Mine definitely doesn't do that.

Do you notice it when using the computer, or only on a perfectly black screen?

Keep us posted!

I notice this most on the default blue background. It is really noticeable
with the black background (pixel check black = all pixels on).

Most noticeable under dim lighting.

If you look in this post ( https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/353984/ )scroll down a bit to the pictures you will see my MBP has a bit of a light band at the bottom too.. I didnt take these pictures on dark cuz I was trying to picture the dark area on the right of my screen.. I was at the apple store and they said the light band I have is within apple specs.. Its not as bad as the one you have pictured.. So I would say yours is not normal, or in to apple spec like mine is.. Hpe this helps..

I may take mine in and see what a genius has to say and look
at the floor models. Don't think I dare swap this though, I'd hate
to get an even worse yellow samsung screen and can't handle
any downtime.

In the meantime, I've switched to a different background and turned
down the brightness (it does not need to be cranked!) which helps
alot. The only thing I see this being an issue with is watching letterboxed
movies with the black top and bottom bars.

Otherwise, I'm loving my Macbook Not-So-Pro very much!

Keep those comments. Thanks!

It's called Backlight Bleeding.

Thanks for the clarification in nomenclature. This helped me on
my search terms to find that some others have the same issue.
One thread indicated it 'might' fade over time with some hot/cold cycles,
but I'm not convinced of that.

Real question is, do most or all LG displays have this backlight bleed
and will it fade over time? Should I live with it or have it
looked at?

I have edited the title to be more clear.

Thanks!

Sigh.

Apple ought to add one more button to their shopping cart...

Apple ought to add one more button to their shopping cart...

Damn, that's funny!

Apple has had pretty craptastic displays ever since the powerbook 'hi-res'.
I remember having to return my hi-res PB
because of horizontal lines. Than there was uneven backlighting
on pretty much all of the cfl MBPs. Now these sub-par LED screens...
Oh, and who can forget the 'white spot' powerbooks
way back when.

Apple really needs to work on their display technology.
Hopefully when Leopard goes resolution independent
and LED tech is more mature Apple can use more standard
displays and fall in with better display vendors.

Oh well, still love my Macbook Not-So-Pro.

Tee hee! :D (Thanks!)

It just amazing the terrible luck Apple is having with its vendors. LG's screens are chromatically correct but ooze like teenage zits on prom night and Samsung's screens have a nice complexion but it's pancreas and liver are shot.

Its one or the other! Poor bastards.

What dat?

Resolution independence in the OS means you can change
the overall screen resolution indepedent of the display
resolution. I don't think apple goes to really high resolution
laptop displays like other vendors because everything (text, icons,
etc), would be too small. But with leopard, you will be able
to adjust the overall resolution up or down to suit your taste.

That means this will open up the possibility to have really
high resolution displays and give apple more options.

But don't all LCD/LED screens have a "native" mode where one resolution is much clearer than another? Is this feature supposed to overcome that?

Yes, this will allow you to change resolution (size of fonts, text, windows, everything) while the display is set native.

I had a genius look at my display. First response 'I've never heard
of that' before. Second response - 'within tolerance, not much we can do'.
Third response 'I see what you are talking about, call apple and
have them DOA it for a new one'. I had him document the issue and give
me a case #, I'm going to call apple tomorrow.

Tough one, but guess I'm sending this back. Two early model 15" in the
store, one glossy, the other matte, were both LG's and did NOT have
backlight bleeding.

Question - anyone with a recent LG display NOT have backlight bleed?

Do I feel lucky?

Here's a clue... it's the STORE. They WANT you to buy Apple computers! Do you really think there was a memo recommending that they display the seconds or consumer returns?

They might have opened 34 boxes before they found those two units. I feel their pain.

So are you saying if I try and get a new one, I'll likely get the same
bleed LG (or worse piss yellow samsung)?

Tough one. It's like sometimes I really don't notice and have to look for the bleed, and other times it smacks me right in the face. Makes me wonder if maybe it really will fade over time? Wishful thinking.
