Resolved Barebones Mini

Which older model Mini can I get away with using as purely an iTunes music server. It's sole function is launching iTunes and playing the high-resolution (24 bit 96 kHz) tunes stored on my 6TB external hard-drive.

Could I go as far back as the Intel Core Solo 1.5GHz 1GB? Or would I need something a bit more meaty for those hi-res files?

For music, any mini will do. You will need Snow Leopard or later to run iTunes 10.7.

Considering that my iPod mini can play 24/48, I'd think a G4 would be fine Though personally I'd go for the Core Solo for the reason flopticalcube mentioned.
