Battery not charging all of a sudden

Second Generation, 8 GB touch.
Has been siting but plugged into power USB for months.
I am going to use it on a trip so I have been spending time
putting music in it as well as video's.
Plugged into the USB...all of a sudden charging is in the red, despite being plugged in for days.
This unit before I plugged it into the stereo had been sitting for a year +
any ideas?
