I'm looking for a small messenger bag that holds a mbp 13 and an iPad in a dodo case and maybe a ouple pens and charger/cables for the mbp. I'm using a 15" messenger bag and it's just too big for me. Any suggestions. Preferably under 100 bucks?

I highly recommend that you take a look at Crumpler.

I have a bag that's about 160 euros (so too much) but the quality is very nice and they feel very nice to wear, in addition to looking quite cool. They're also plain silly - check the website.

One of my favorite case/bag companies is STM Bags (http://www.stmbags.com) I have their medium Evolution backpack for my Macbook Pro 15 and I bought their small Alley Shoulder Bags which is designed for a 13" MacBook/Pro. I use it when I want to take my Alienware M11x (since the M11x it a bit huskier than the Mac's it fills the pouch just the same- i.e. perfect fit) and it has a perfect slot for the iPad as well. They also have some Backpacks with iPad specific slots.

Their stuff is Very well made. I've only had one problem with a backpack a while ago and they sent me a new one- This was after I'd been using it for 2 years!

Yeah, i was eyeballing the STM small bag on the apple store. It looks like what i need, but im concerned with it looking like a purse. Im a big guy (6'4") and i dont want something that looks too tiny, but im tired of carrying around my 15-17" compatible Messenger bag when i have a 13" MBP and an iPad, and thats all i really need to cary.

You might get that feeling if you were using one of the really small shoulder bags made to hold only an iPad, but the one for a 13" laptop a pretty decent size. Plus, I think the materials an style keeps it out of that 'Man bag' look (check out the Waterfield Muzzetto for something I think looks like a Man Purse PC bag- http://www.sfbags.com/products/muzetto/muzetto.htm). I'm a bit shorter than you at just over 5'10" and the vertical bag is a comfortable size. It definitely feels like a computer bag and not something for accessories.

If you like this style (vertical, shoulder bag type), I'm pretty sure you'd like the STM, but I know some don't like a vertically oriented bag and prefer a messenger type. I have a couple Timbuk2 bags- one for my MBP15 and a couple smaller (part of my job requires I be familiar with various accessories, bags, apps, etc. so I get to buy whatever might help me advise a client). I kinda like the STM's since they aren't as ubiquitous around here, but some of the newer Timbuk2 device specific bags are really nice. IMO, their dual strap, backpack type ones are a little on the goofy side. Definitely not as nice looking in person.

Ok, there's my $.02 ;) Hope it helps a little.

I've been using the Alley bag for some time now, and I just upgraded to the Evolution after looking around for quite a while for a new one. I absolutely love the Evolution, definitely a great bag. The only thing I dislike is the "hideaway laptop compartment" thing. I could do without that flap in there. Otherwise, it's great.

I went to the MAc store today, hoping they would have the STM Small bag there, but no luck. All they have are the HUGE 17 inch bags there, nothing for the 13" other than sleeves. I really wish they had a better selection :(

I guess ill have to order online and wait a week.

Small timbuk2

Or the small size D-lux messenger bag would be my suggestion. Like the look and lots of color options. I have a XS too, but that is really small.
