Best supported browser for Mountain Lion?

I am using Chrome version 49 now. Do I really need to worry about security updates? I was told Macs were not prone to viruses and such like the Windows OS. If I am safe to continue using Chrome v49 then that would be great news..

I use Waterfox. Works beautifully on my 2006 white plastic iMac running Mountain Lion and is supported through to 2019.
