What's the best way of creating a second bootable partition on my MacBook in order to test the Developer Preview/Public Beta? In the past, I've cloned my internal drive and run the betas from an external drive. However, with the MacBook that's a little more of a hassle. Can I simply create a second partition in Disk Utility (or perhaps in BootCamp, but installing OS X instead of Windows), or is it more complicated than that?

Yes, simply create a partition in Disk Utility and format it as "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)". I recommend at least 20 GB in size. You should be able to install OS X to that partition.
