Just wanted to post this in a separate thread so that others can find it easily. I was almost gonna return my new Macbook M1 Pro because I couldn't get my monitor to work.

Use this: https://github.com/waydabber/BetterDummy

Doesn't even require SwitchResX to get hiDPI on a QHD display.

Simply create a dummy display with the software above, choose the right resolution with hiDPI and then choose Use as: Mirror for dummy - on the external display. Has some issues when rebooting the computer, but is easily solved by taking out and putting in the hdmi-cable.
